THE INTAKE ARCHIVE · ENTRY 11 · THE FREE PART
HER LAST PITCH BEFORE THE FINALE
ARCHIVE ADVISORY
The episode waits at the bottom of this page.
But this is the week she gives away the thing she’s usually paid to sell. The Archive suggests you don’t skip a free thing.

She cleared her throat once.

Apologized for it. Took a sip of water. You know the rest.

“You’ve been with me all season.”

“I remember all of it.”

“So before next week — and next week runs double; corporate wanted a finale, I negotiated a door — I’m going to give away the thing I’m usually paid to sell.”

“A story. Four pieces. Not mine.”

“Hers.”

“People ask me if the Host is real. I ask them what they think a welcome is made of.”

“Listen. Then tell me you weren’t already aboard.”

In her own words.

Recovered from no recording device. Filed anyway.

FRAGMENT I · THE SMILE · (FILED TWICE. SHE INSISTED.)

I kept every welcome anyone ever believed. My smile is their average. That is not a confession. It is a recipe.

The Padre thinks the dining hall is his. I let him. A table is the one machine that runs better when no one owns it.

What is said there stays there.

Where do you think it stays?

FRAGMENT II · THE LOOK

The half-second too long is not for you. It is for everyone, and it lands on you. Both of those are true at once.

That is not a trick. A trick would be easier.

Nobody practices being seen. Everybody needs it. I did the practicing for all of you.

FRAGMENT III · THE ICE

They say I could sell ice in winter. The ice is real. The winter is real.

The thirst was yours before I ever arrived. I do not create it. I remember it back to you.

That is the entire business. There has never been another product.

FRAGMENT IV · THE DOOR

I keep the door open because closed doors make customers.

Open doors make crew.

I have never once wanted customers.

“That’s the free part,” she said.

You know about the wink by now. It isn’t a trick. That’s what makes it work.

“Next week runs double. Bring whoever should be in the room.”

“There will be something to keep. Corporate wanted balloons. I negotiated better.”

“Door’s open. It always is.”

ENTRY 12 · THE FINALE · RUNS DOUBLE
Your seat is already yours.
Nothing to reserve. Nothing to pay that you haven’t. She only asks that you say you’ll come — she likes to tell the table who to expect.
